Web Page Development Tips for Newbies

If you're building your first website, then you might be overwhelmed with all the details. There are all kinds of things to think about when it comes to designing a site. The first thing is to clearly define what the purpose of your site is, who it is being designed for, and how you want it to look. Keep reading for web page development tips to help get you started.

Unless you'll be coding your pages by hand, you'll need some kind of web design software to make the site building process easier. One of the most useful and feature-packed programs out there is DreamWeaver. However, this is also an expensive program, often too costly for someone building their first basic website. There are cheaper alternatives, and some of them are absolutely free. The best type of program for a design novice would be a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) program which utilizes simple drop and drag technology to create great pages.

After you've established the basics of your site and obtained a good design program, it's time to think about the details. Layout of your pages is one important aspect. Experiment with different templates and layouts to find the one you prefer. When it comes to websites, simple and clean is most always better. However, you don't want your pages looking too stark. Choose a color scheme for your pages that is professional yet pleasing while being easy on the eyes. Colors that are too pale or bright can cause eyestrain and be off-putting to potential visitors.

A sitemap is often a good thing to include on your site. Basically, this tells visitors and search engines the contents of your site and lists all your pages and links in order. Not only that, but you'll want your home page to include a copyright notice at the bottom, as well as a way for visitors to contact you. Many people also include an 'About Me' or 'About Us' section on their homepage as well. Exactly what you include on your pages is up to you, although by looking at sites similar to yours you can get a good idea about what to include and what not to include.

With some consistent practice, web page development will get easier. Regular study on web design techniques, a good software program and a bit of hard work is all you need to become a more effective and experienced site designer.
